Gas nitriding was performed at 400°C, 475°C and 550°C. Effects of Gas Nitriding on Fatigue and Crack Initiation Nitriding was found to reduce the fatigue strength of the samples to a similar level irrespective of being in the as-built or machined condition. During the gas nitriding treatment, nitrogen, which is provided by the catalytic dissociation of ammonia, diffuses through the steel surface to form a concentration gradient as well as nitride precipitates in the nitriding case.
